Thinking about handling your 20.42% Nenkin tax refund on your own once you're back home? Japanese law won't allow it — here's why, and what the law actually requires.

❌ MYTH: "I can claim the 20.42% pension tax refund all by myself from overseas."

⭕ FACT: NO. Japanese tax law requires an official Tax Agent (納税管理人) residing in Japan to file the tax return and receive the refund.

To claim the 20.42% tax refund on your Lumpsum Pension (Dattai Ichijikin), the Japanese tax office requires a registered Tax Agent living in Japan to handle the paperwork and receive the funds on your behalf. As a licensed tax accountant, I can serve as your tax representative.
